The House at the End of the Hallway
An Original Supernatural Horror Story
The Door That Opened by Itself
The old house stood at the end of a narrow, forgotten road, surrounded by dead trees and thick fog. Its windows were covered in dust, its walls were cracked, and its front door creaked whenever the wind passed through the broken fence.
For years, nobody had lived there.
Locals claimed that strange sounds sometimes came from inside the building after midnight. Some heard footsteps crossing the upper floor, while others reported seeing a pale light behind the curtains. Most people dismissed these stories as rumours, but nobody wanted to investigate them alone.
One cold autumn evening, a man named Daniel decided to explore the property. He was a photographer who enjoyed documenting abandoned buildings and forgotten places. He had heard the rumours, but he believed there was a perfectly reasonable explanation for everything.
As he approached the entrance, the wind suddenly stopped.
The silence was so complete that he could hear his own breathing.
Then the front door slowly swung open.
Daniel stood still for a moment before stepping inside.
A House Frozen in Time
The hallway smelled of damp wood and something metallic. Torn curtains hung beside the windows, and old photographs covered the walls. A broken clock rested on a small table, its hands permanently fixed at 12:17.
Daniel switched on his flashlight.
The beam moved across a dusty sofa, a fallen bookshelf, and a staircase disappearing into darkness. Everything looked abandoned, yet there was something unsettling about the place. It felt less like an empty house and more like a room someone had left only moments earlier.
He took several photographs.
When he checked his camera, he noticed something strange in the last picture. At the far end of the hallway stood a dark figure.
Daniel immediately turned around.
Nothing was there.
He looked back at the photograph. The figure remained, its face hidden in shadow and its body facing directly towards the camera.
He deleted the image and decided it was time to leave.
Then he heard three slow knocks from upstairs.
Knock. Knock. Knock.
The Room Nobody Entered
Daniel climbed the staircase, telling himself that an old building could make all kinds of noises. The wooden steps groaned beneath his feet as he approached a narrow corridor.
At the end stood a black door.
Unlike the others, it had no handle. Only a small, rusted keyhole marked its centre.
As Daniel moved closer, he heard a faint whisper from the other side.
“Don’t open it.”
He froze.
The voice sounded distant, almost as if it were travelling through a long tunnel. He waited, expecting to hear something else, but the house fell silent again.
Then the door opened a few inches by itself.
Behind it was a small, completely empty room. There were no windows, no furniture, and no visible source for the cold air that flowed into the corridor.
On the wall, someone had written a sentence in faded black paint:
“You were here before.”
Daniel stared at the words.
He had never visited the house before that evening. He was certain of it.
Yet something about the room stirred a strange feeling of recognition, as though he had seen it in a dream he could no longer remember.
Suddenly, the door slammed shut behind him.
Footsteps in the Darkness
Daniel rushed towards the staircase, but the hallway seemed longer than before. The door at the far end was no longer visible, and the walls appeared to stretch into darkness.
Behind him came the sound of footsteps.
Slow.
Heavy.
Getting closer.
He turned his flashlight towards the corridor.
At the far end stood the same shadowy figure he had seen in the photograph.
Its head tilted slightly to one side.
Daniel shouted, demanding to know who was there.
The figure did not answer.
Instead, every door along the hallway began opening at once. A freezing wind swept through the house, extinguishing the flashlight for a few seconds.
When the light returned, the figure had disappeared.
Daniel ran downstairs, stumbled through the entrance, and reached his car without looking back. He drove until the house had vanished from sight, then stopped beside a petrol station to catch his breath.
His hands were shaking.
He checked his camera again.
Every photograph he had taken inside the house was black.
Except for one.
The final image showed Daniel standing in the upstairs corridor, his back turned towards the camera.
He had never asked anyone to take that picture.
The Photograph That Changed Everything
Daniel returned home and locked every door. He tried to convince himself that exhaustion, darkness, and the strange atmosphere of the building had played tricks on his mind.
For the next few nights, nothing unusual happened.
Then, at exactly 12:17 a.m., he heard three knocks from inside his bedroom wardrobe.
He sat up in bed.
The room was silent.
Three more knocks followed.
He switched on the bedside lamp and approached the wardrobe. Its doors were slightly open, revealing nothing but his clothes and the darkness behind them.
Daniel shut the doors firmly.
When he turned around, his camera was sitting on the bed.
He had left it in the living room.
Its screen was glowing, displaying a new photograph.
The image showed the abandoned house, its windows dark and its front door open. Standing in the upstairs window was a figure with a face that looked remarkably like Daniel’s own.
Beneath the photograph, a timestamp read 12:17 a.m.
Daniel dropped the camera.
From somewhere inside the wardrobe came a quiet whisper.
“You came back.”
The House Still Waits
The next morning, Daniel contacted a friend and told him everything. Together, they returned to the location, determined to discover what was really happening.
But when they reached the end of the road, the house was gone.
In its place stood an empty patch of land covered with weeds. There were no foundations, no broken fence, and no sign that a building had ever stood there.
Daniel searched the surrounding area for hours.
Nothing.
His friend eventually persuaded him to leave.
That night, Daniel placed his camera in a locked drawer and tried to forget the experience. Before going to sleep, he checked the wardrobe one final time.
Its doors were closed.
The room was empty.
At 12:17 a.m., the bedroom light flickered.
From inside the wardrobe came three familiar knocks.
And then, from the darkness behind him, a voice whispered:
“You forgot to close the door.”
Daniel slowly turned around.
The bedroom door stood wide open, revealing a long, dark hallway that did not belong to his house.
At its far end stood a shadowy figure.
And behind the figure, a single window glowed with warm, amber light.
The abandoned house was waiting for him again.
The End.
